In 1940's there were three prolific makers of rearing horse bookends during the mid century and all three are discussed in the books, "Glass Animals Including Animals & Figural Related Items" by Dick & Pat Spencer and " Glass Animals & Figurines" by Debbie and Randy Coe. The most notable differences and the easiest to tell are as follows...
The LE Smith version is the ONLY one with a beaded mane. Both the Fostoria and New Martinsville versions have a cropped mane but the Fostoria horses 'nose is slightly upturned at the tip whereas the New Martinsville version is tucked in and called a " Roman" nose. Also the New Martinsville version has the head and neck tucked closer to the body than the Fostoria version. They would make a great gift for your favorite horse collector.
